DPAS briefing 17: women drug users and drugs service provision
A key target in the government's 10-year Drugs Strategy is to double the numbers of problem drug users in drug treatment programmes by 2008 (UKADCU 1999). This target is informed by research, which suggests that a significant proportion of problem drug users were not in contact with drugs services. One particular group difficult to engage or retain in drugs treatment, is women problematic drug users (ACMD 1998). Commentators have suggested a number of reasons for this, including the characteristics of women drug users, the barriers they face accessing drugs services and gaps in the provision of appropriate services. While there is a growing recognition that drugs services need to examine their response to women, it has been unclear what practical measures might be taken. This report has therefore been commissioned to help inform thinking about developing better provision for women problem drug users.
