Back to Drug Interventions Programme (DIP) E-bulletinsDIP E-bulletin - October 2008
Welcome to the October 2008 edition of the monthly e-bulletin for the Drug Interventions Programme.
New milestone for DIP numbers into treatment
The numbers of people entering treatment via the criminal justice system hit a new high point in July, when they topped 5,000 for the first time.
Sally Richards, acting Director for the Drug Interventions Programme at the Home Office, paid tribute to all involved in the continued success of the work:
‘Many of you will know that the Programme had a long standing target to increase the number of drug-misusing offenders entering treatment through the criminal justice system to 1000 each week by March 2008. We achieved that target two months early in January and have been consistently achieving over 4000 into treatment each month since.
‘The latest final figures for July show we’ve reached a new landmark – the first time we’ve seen over 5,000 into treatment (the total number is 5,194).
‘It is great to see performance being sustained and, in fact, improving. Congratulations to everyone involved – to national and regional leads and to local partnerships - for this achievement.’
Launch of newsletter on housing, social exclusion and reducing re-offending
There is now a new newsletter on housing and social exclusion issues and reducing re-offending, which aims to keep recipients up-to-date with the latest developments.
Inside Outside is produced by officials in Communities and Local Government (CLG) and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). The first edition is now on the CLG website.
To download the first edition and receive future editions, you need to subscribe to Have Your Say (new window). CLG recommend that you choose to receive the HTML version.
Do you have a DIP success story to tell?
Earlier this year, the central DIP team published a round-up of recent success stories about people whose lives have been changed by the programme’s range of interventions and support services around the country.
The communications team are now working on a refresh of the document to capture any new stories of how DIP is making a difference. If you have any case stories for inclusion, please e-mail gillian.radcliffe@coi.gsi.gov.uk for a form to submit the details.
The identities of clients will be protected unless they have given consent to being named. In some cases in the current round-up document, clients agreed to use pseudonyms but indicated they were willing to speak to journalists as part of PR work to promote the programme to other drug misusers. It is hoped similar examples can be found again this time.
The deadline for returns is 30 November and the document will be published by the end of the year.

Latest Key Messages
The latest Key Messages for DIP provide a core script to describe the various elements of the programme and the key points that should be understood about them. This can be a useful resource when preparing reports, briefings and other publications about DIP and it is reviewed and updated every two months. The October/November edition is now available.
