How long does it usually take to process a completed domestic licence application?
At present you should allow a minimum of twelve weeks from the date of submission of your application.

Are separate licences required to import/export controlled drugs?
Yes, but a domestic licence is needed before a company can apply for an import/export licence.

When business circumstances change, will my licence still be valid?
It depends on those circumstances, but you should immediately inform Drugs Licensing & Compliance Unit so your licence can be amended if necessary and our records updated.

If a licence is mislaid or lost, will a duplicate be issued?
Licences are important documents and should be kept in a safe place. If they are lost or stolen you should inform this office immediately. A replacement will not be issued if the document has been lost.

Will the police have to visit the premises to be licensed?
The premises may be visited by a Home Office Drugs Compliance Officer who may be accompanied by a police officer.

Who provides advice on legal and other requirements for the safe security of controlled drugs?
Guidance is available on the website but licence applicants and existing licensees should seek further information and advice from Drugs Licensing & Compliance Unit.

Do carriers, including freight carriers and shippers, need a licence to transit controlled drugs?
No, carriers do not require a licence when acting in the course of their business

What arrangements exist for the destruction of controlled drugs?
In certain circumstances, CDs can only be destroyed under the auspices of an authorised witness. This can be a police officer or someone with an authority to witness destructions issued by the Home Office. If necessary, please contact Drugs Licensing & Compliance Unit for further advice on this issue.

Do all licensees have to provide statistical and other information on its trading and/or usage of controlled drugs?
Wholesalers, manufacturers and suppliers of controlled drugs have to supply the Home Office with annual returns by 31 January each year. All licensees are required to submit a annual statement of compliance by the same date. The relevant forms are available on the website.
