Drug strategy

Rehabilitation through employment

Aiming to support those clients with a history of drugs misuse to take up and or remain engaged in Mainstream / New Deal provision, and enable them to secure and sustain employment.

The Department of Work and Pensions (new window) and Jobcentre Plus (new window) implement P2W nationally.

P2W aims to help those recovering from illegal drug misuse to gain and sustain employment.  Led by Jobcentre Plus this initiative has been developed as part of the government's wider approach to help those with the greatest disadvantage.  P2W provides support for clients who have made sufficient progress in their recovery to be drug free or stabilised, but whose history of drug misuse is likely to be a significant factor in preventing them from getting or keeping work.  An initial investment of £40m over three years has been made to develop and implement P2W.

P2w has three key strands:

  • the appointment of a local Jobcentre Plus co-ordinator who links up with key local partners (including Drug Action Teams, Prisons etc..) to make sure that drug treatment and employment services are joined up effectively;
  • contracted specialist support to help clients access and sustain work, mainstream employment and necessary training.
  • training/awareness for Jobcentre Plus staff to be better able to identify and refer to appropriate clients.
