Drug Interventions Programme

Throughcare & Aftercare

This section includes a variety of guidance, information and support to help DATs implement throughcare and aftercare.

Government Office for the South East

The Government Office for the South East produces a Drugs and Communities newsletter as part of an occasional series.  Each edition focuses on a drugs related topic and presents case studies, projects, guidance and forthcoming events.

Edition 1 (October 2007) :  Housing

Edition 2 (April 2008): Family support and information focus.

The next edition will be due out in the Summer and will focus on how drugs services are meeting diverse needs within the community. Do you have a successful drugs and communities project within the South East you would like to share in the next newsletter?  Are there barriers you are coming across time and time again - maybe another reader will have the solution?

Peer Led Support

Developing Peer Led Support for Individuals Leaving Substance Misuse Treatment
The importance of aftercare for those who have completed substance misuse treatment is now well acknowledged. However, there is still limited evidence on what works in peer-led aftercare support, particularly where drug misusers want support to be drug free. There are also a limited number of these projects: peer support has been identified as a gap in aftercare provision.

Peer-Led Approaches for Ex-Drug Users to Meet Diverse Needs: A Practice Guide  (October 2006)
This practice guide has been developed as a resource for DAAT partnerships and commissioners to provide examples of practice that will support them in developing and delivering appropriate peer-led support to meet the diverse needs of ex-drug users in their local areas. It identifies transferable practice using examples of practical approaches of peer-led support in England from within the substance misuse sector, but also from associated sectors such as mental health and HIV.
