Over 70 local partners took part in the National Tackling Drugs Day 2007.
An impressive level of activity and media coverage was generated to highlight the positive action being taken locally to tackle drug misuse. Just some of the events that took place last year include:
Southwark - Government Ministers Alan Johnson, Vernon Coaker and Andy Burnham together with MPs CLive Betts and John Leech, battled it out on the football pitch against anti-drugs charity Dads Against Drugs and Positive Futures.
West Yorkshire Police took part in a wide range of activities through out the week. This included drug-driving signs on the motorway, awareness events with universities and laun ching a book of poems and posters compiled by school children. Widespread media coverage appeared including enforcement activity on Yorkshire Television.
Salford - a group of recovering drug users raised cash for the Children of Chernobyl charity by rowing 35 km - the same distance as the English Channel.
Hounslow CSP - scrummed down with players from Harlequins Rugby League club to promote work to tackle drugs and drug crime.
Doncaster - held a friendly five a side football match with clients from a drugs day centre and staff from the Drugs Intervention Programme.
Sunderland - set the ball rolling for a day of advice and support with a five-a-side football tournament. Later in the day, Doroty from the Wizard of Oz and her friends the lion, the tin man and the scarecrow helped get the message across to children in Darlington about the dangers of drugs.
Camden - held a 24-hour programme of activities aimed at tackling the local drugs market. The day began with an earlyu morning covert operation targeting anti social and drug hot spots throughout the borough. Police officers offered local people advice on the dangers of drug use and supplied information on the support and treatment services available.
