Winner: Crack House Protocol: Southwark/Met Police
This initiative was aimed at tackling the serious impact drug dealing from crack houses in Southwark were having on the local community. Using an intelligence led approach and working closely in partnership with the local authority, Southwark police developed a protocol that would assist in permanently closing crack houses on the borough.
The protocol included special provision for vulnerable tenants that offered diversion, treatment and re-housing services
This initiative has improved public confidence in the police and enhanced relationships between the police and local partners
Outcomes:
- 48 arrests for drug offences
- 25 evictions and repossessions to date
- 25 further cases awaiting proceedings for repossession.
Commended: Operation Puglia: Met Police
Puglia aimed to remove class A drug dealers from the locality of Kensal Rise whilst providing community reassurance.
An intelligence led investigation using covert surveillance and Test purchase officers led to
- 34 people arrested for offences varying from Handling Stolen Goods to murder
- the arrest of 23 Individuals for conspiracy to supply
- Seizure of 7 Vehicles valued at £20,000
Since the operation:
- Burglary reduced by 60%
- Robbery reduced by 100%
- Firearm possession/discharge/attempted murder reduced by 100%
- Assault/violence reduced by 62%
The community was consulted throughout this operation and as a result public confidence in the police has increased.
Commended: Operation Achieve/Achievable: Avon & Somerset
This operation tackled inter gang rivalry between organised crime networks in Bristol who were fighting over the class A distribution network.
One group had recently been released from prison and were involved in a number of armed incidents with rival drug dealers.
Police intelligence indicated armed conflict in Bristol was imminent and reacted quickly arresting and charging suspects in addition to getting parole licence' revoked.
- 10 people were arrested for serious offences.
- 1 person returned to complete his prison sentence
- 5 remanded in custody
- 3 people sentenced to a total of 22 years imprisonment
This operation has been welcomed by the local community and confidence in the police increased.
